Last night I dreamed I was going to go swimming in a public pool for the first time in a very long time. I was afraid, though, not because of the water itself but because I wasn’t sure I was ready. What I was supposed to be ready for, I am not sure. I just felt some sense of trepidation.
My friend noticed me fidgeting with the ties of my bikini bottoms.
“Don’t worry,” she said, “it’s not the 90s anymore. Nobody cares how pale you are.”
